This is why we live here

Do you ever feel really special for being on the Earth at this time? Well I did today as we hiked around and witnessed the fragile desert extremes. Today was a beautiful Saturday with our dogs and the desert.

Pictures were taken with a Canon G9 courtesy of James Neeley (a.k.a. Dad). Check out his stuff!

Thanks Dan, for dictating the musings of Elizabeth!

this morning I enjoyed reading this...

Slow Money

Happy New Year 2011! Back to work with the promise of a fresh start and a whole new year of possibilities. Nick started his work year finding and fixing some broken water lines. Kind of ironic seeing as he spent his New Year weekend crawling under our trailer thawing frozen water pipes and making it so that doesn't happen again. Yep, what a guy.

growing joy

Growing things give me joy. Today I feel like rambling about plants. I do this often as almost daily in my job I am blown away by some new plant discovery. Nick has learned to put up with this new found love, but I think he now really enjoys my blabbering and shares the passion. We have a lovely Christmas Cactus in our home. What an incredible plant: all year it is a leggy, interesting green cactus with arms reaching out that look like a bunch of fat stick bugs. Then, as the days get shorter and the nights longer, the plant will bud and if you're lucky and cared for it right, blooms. Hence the name - it usually blooms around Christmas. The blossoms are beautiful hot pink flowers which seem to come out of no where. This year we were away for two weeks in early December and we got home to see one flower- the only flower of the year! Just having one sure made me appreciate it more (I even photographed it lots). I love this plant because it turns its winter freak out of less daylight and less water into something beautiful. It gets really stressed and as a result, flowers. So, inspired by the Christmas cactus, I am going to look for beauty and color in unexpected places this holiday season. Sounds good huh?

One more plant to talk about: the Bolivian Rainbow Pepper. The fully mature peppers on this ornamental pepper plant are bright red and their spiciness is just short of habenero a.k.a hot! In the maturation process the peppers go from purple to white to yellow to orange to red. You can have all of those colors on the plant at one time making it look like a Christmas tree with multi-colored lights. This year because of all of our traveling, this plant takes the place of a pine tree and warms my heart just the same. Those peppers also warm Nick's stir fry.. mm mm.

Other things making me happy this holiday season are triple-ginger cookies, gift giving, oranges and grapefruit, LED twinkle lights, cute Kleenex boxes and the incredible healing power of chicken broth.

A Fabulous Fall

A painful fall turned into a fabulous fall. A friend of ours is writing a climbing guide book for the Moab area and asked me to climb a route to be pictured in the book. Perhaps it was the pressure from the camera above, but on one fall I slammed my foot into the cliff at a funky angle and sprained my ankle. Oh man! I spent a week on crutches and then a lot of weeks gimping around the house. After a bit of sulking I started seeing the bright side of the injury. Nick worked a lot in November and my seasonal job was over until January, so I had a lot of alone time. Being confined by my ankle, I spent my fall trying to get my dogs to enjoy fetch, baking lots of delicious goods, trying to perfect my pizza crust, crocheting hats and chalk bags, reading books, listening to books on tape, talking with loved ones, watching the leaves fall from the window, making life plans and taking naps with Haas as my pillow. I'm not complaining anymore! Fall may be my favorite season, but ask me again in the spring. :)

Now I am back on my feet enjoying the warmth of the Nevada desert and the warmth of Mia and Rich's hospitality. Mia and I are having lots of quality sister time while rich prepares for finals and nick tinkers with a race truck. Today we outlet shopped, shared a soft pretzel, found some treasures at the salvation army and picked out the most perfect Christmas tree. Family is such a blessing.

Post number 1

To me, beginning a blog is a very daunting task. One that requires self-exploration, organization and a reliable internet source: all things that I often don't have. None the less, here it goes. We are Nick and Jess Oldham, partners forever in this journey called life. We live in the beautiful Moab Utah surrounded by red rocks and happy, eccentric people. We love eating and growing good food, outdoor adventures in rock climbing and our two huskies, Haas and Rufus. Hence, the name of the blog: Salad, Sending and Sleddogs. I guess one could assume that we also love alliteration.
